In recent years, the world has witnessed the acceptance of
LGBTQ individuals. People are being exposed to conversations of sexuality and
gender. Many people would agree that social media has played a significant role
in increasing visibility, but it's not the sole reason for rising acceptance.
Many of us know that a community like LGBTQ exists through social media. But
here’s the uncomfortable truth: while awareness has grown, so has the backlash.
Instead of fostering understanding and support, many use these platforms to
bully LGBTQ individuals, leaving negative comments and perpetuating hate.
The question arises: After gaining awareness, what we have
done? Are we even trying to build an inclusive society? If yes, then what about
the rising suicidal cases among LGBTQ individuals? You may recall an incident
that occurred around November, 2023. A 16-year-old queer child took their own
life due to bullying. The class 10 student, studying in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
used to share makeup related content on his Instagram. He had a good number of
followers. Around Diwali, his reel went viral in which he was wearing a saree.
Unfortunately, his comment section was flooded with hateful and homophobic
comments leading to this heartbreaking outcome. Pranshu, whose dream of
becoming a makeup artist was shattered by the cruelty of social media. Pranshu's
mother said, "Why is no attention being paid to the fact that a 16-year-
old faced hate comments online for doing something they not only loved, but
were also good at?"
Similar incident occurred in 2019 when a 19-year-old from Chennai
shared a Facebook post about the harassment he suffered around. In his post, he
expressed “It’s not my fault that I was born gay. Everyone thinks I am a boy
but the way I walk, think and talk is like a girl.” He also pleaded, “Please
don’t blame my family, it’s not their fault either.” This statement is deeply
concerning, which highlighted the level of discomfort and distress he faced due
to the behaviour of those around him.
These two incidents are about India, a country that earlier
used to accept and celebrate all forms of love. The Indian religious books
which contained homosexual characters. The Rigveda contains the phrase Vikriti
Evam Prakriti meaning what seems unnatural is also natural. Kamasutra mentions
that the lesbians were called ‘Swarinis’. Another very visual example is the
Khajuraho temple of Madhya Pradesh, built in the 12th century,
known for their overt erotic sculptures showcasing the existence of sexual
fluidity between homosexuals. The Indian society was tolerant towards them
during ancient as well as medieval times. So, what’s stopping us now?

Social Media? The social media platforms allow people from all walks of life- whether women, children or special focus groups-to showcase talent and skills. Media’s representation plays a significant role in shaping our perceptions. We must acknowledge the misrepresentation of gay characters in movies- often portrayed as flamboyant or negative stereotypes.
It's time for us to create a society that not only accepts
but celebrates all forms of love as our ancestors did. By fostering education, awareness
and compassion, we can build a society where no individual is compelled to take
their own lives due the fear of rejection. Let’s choose understanding over judgement
and empathy over indifference.
