Cinema and Suicide

Cinema, as a powerful storytelling medium, has the ability to aware, inform, educate and interpret about various topics. Suicide, a complex and sensitive issue is, no exception. Bollywood, in particular has played a dual role in influencing public opinion on mental health and suicide.

On one hand, Bollywood has brought conversation about suicide to public sphere, helping to break the stigma and encourage dialogue. On the other hand, it has reinforced damaging myths and stereotypes. The portrayal of suicide and mental health can be classified into two phases. These two phases reflect the change in the depiction of such issues and film industry’s understanding of its responsibility in shaping public perception. Through this we can critically analyze how Bollywood depiction of suicide influenced audience - sometimes for better, and sometimes for worse.

1.      EARLY DEPICTIONS

Devdas (2002): Directed by Sajay Leela Bhansali, the film depicts the themes of heartbreak, societal pressures and inability to cope up with emotional pain. The film glorifies the self-destructive tendencies, presenting them as a symbol of undying love and devotion. The portrayal of unhealthy coping mechanisms and narrative risks validating the idea that love justifies the notion of self-harm.

Aashiqui 2 (2013): One of the darker aspects of the film is the depiction of suicide as the potential escape from the pain of addiction and the overwhelming guilt of personal failure. Rahul, a talented musician spirals into self-destruction due to alcoholism. The portrayal of suicide in Aashiqui 2 focuses heavily on emotional despair, leading to the dangerous notion that personal failure, heartbreak, and addiction could lead one to the only solution of escaping pain-suicide.

2.      MODERN-DAY DEPICTIONS

With growing awareness of mental health and importance of social media, Bollywood has begun portraying suicide as a consequence of untreated psychological struggles.

For example:

Dear Zindagi (2016): While it did not primarily focus on suicide, the film emphasizes the importance of seeking therapy for mental health challenges. It addresses how societal pressures can lead to suicidal thoughts if left unaddressed.

Chhichhore (2019): Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the movie takes a thoughtful approach to the topic of suicide. It tells the story of a father narrating his college memories to his son, who attempted suicide after failing an exam. The film sends a positive and impactful message on the importance of mental health.

From romanticizing pain to embracing healing.

The progress from romanticized and misguided portrayals of suicide to a more responsible depictions like Dear Zindagi, Chhichhore reflects a growing recognition of mental health issues that lead to even suicides.
